Cat amongst pigeons

Cat amongst pigeons
160×450mm, Black Printed on vibrant Dayglow TM Pink Card (sold unframed)
Based on the phrase to put or set the cat amongst the pigeons, which is thought to have originated in gambling, during British Colonialism in India, where a cat was let loose into a group of pigeons and bets were placed on the number it could bring down. Now days it refers to stirring up trouble or controversy.
This print is composed in one setting on the press, utilising an ordinary ‘grotesque sans’ face (maker unknown). The word CAT is printed in a wider, rare handcut inline-sans face, produced by William Henry Bonnewell & Co, 16 Old Bailey, London EC, between 1868-1880. The blocks have a lovely metal stamped ‘16 Old Bailey’ on their reverse.
